Rehearsals are in full swing for our upcoming production of Annie Baker’s Circle Mirror Transformation. As the director and actors are diving head first into the material, designers and technicians are working full-speed to fully realize the world before the technical rehearsals start on February 13.
Full disclosure: this happens for every production here at Theatre Horizon. And yet this time—more clearly than ever—I feel as if the whole team is working relentlessly on getting it right. Of course, this implies that there is a wrong way—which is certainly not what I’m trying to say. It’s more that the whole team is astutely aware of the “tight rope” that must be walked. Playwright Annie Baker’s plays demand this level of commitment.
The article linked below—first published in the February 25, 2013 issue of The New Yorker—tells not only about the biographical roots of Ms. Baker, but also the complex nature of producing organic plays. Director Matthew Decker passed it along to me a couple months ago, and re-reading it reminded me of how exciting this journey has been and will be. Theatre Horizon is proud to be the first company in Philadelphia to mount this important work. I hope you’ll agree… and I hope to see you at the show.
